I'm guessing there are some linguering objects (zones, records,...) of some kind that need to be removed. After disabling "NTPClient" in the registry and restarting the server the problem was gone. (Go to HKLM/System/CurrentControlSet/Services/W32Time/NTPClient, Open/Edit the "Enabled" key, set it to 0 (zero) and restart). This DNS server is configured to use information obtained from Active Directory for this zone and is unable to load the zone without it.
